By: Will Mitchell

With the first week of Coachella over, there was no better time for Beyoncé to drop her new documentary Homecoming on Netflix. The film, which Bey directed herself, gives insight into the months of relentless work that lead up to her historical performance last year.

As if this wasn’t enough, in addition to the Netflix premiere, Beyoncé also revealed Homecoming: The Live Album. This new release converts the 2-hour Coachella set into 40 tracks, and is available across all music sharing platforms.

The tracks feature a series of collaborations, including with husband Jay-Z and former Destiny’s Child members. Blue Ivy even makes an appearance as she mimics her mum’s version of "Black National Anthem": Lift Every Voice and Sing.

Both the album and film focus on the 2018 Coachella show dubbed Beychella, which saw the festival’s first black female headliner put on a quintessential celebration of Black culture. In particular, Bey acknowledges historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), hence the myriad of dancers and marching band members packing out the stage.

Beyoncé has perfected the art of the surprise release, first using it to break the internet in 2013 with the reveal of her self-titled album, and then again with visual album Lemonade in 2016. Following this, the phrase 'Pull a Beyoncé' has now become a widespread term used for when an artist drops an album out of the blue. As soon as news of Homecoming got out it sent fanbase 'the Beyhive' into a twitter frenzy, with many celebrities also showering her with praise.
